Gravel road through northwest Namibia
Choose your travel style

How will you travel?

The choice is partly about driving, and partly about how you want to spend your attention. Consider the roads, distances and responsibilities alongside the freedom of having your own vehicle.

Planning notes from Sol Safaris

Be honest about the road days

Think about how you feel after several hours of driving on unfamiliar roads, then picture doing it between stays. Experience, confidence and the route all matter. The vehicle, insurance terms and support arrangements need careful consideration.

Consider what a guide adds

A guide can take care of the driving and help you understand the places you pass through. Self-drive gives you more day-to-day independence. It may also be possible to combine independent travel with particular guided activities, depending on the route.

Self-drive

You enjoy the road itself and the freedom to set your own rhythm. You are comfortable planning fuel stops, following route guidance, and spending substantial time behind the wheel.

Ask about driving conditions, vehicle requirements, support, and realistic daily distances before committing.

Privately guided

You would prefer someone else to manage the driving and help you understand the landscape. You value local interpretation and want more time to look out of the window.

Discuss your interests with the planner so the guiding, activities, and pace fit your group.

What about flying?

Flights can change the balance of a trip when distances are the main constraint. Compare the full itinerary, including transfers and time at each destination.
